The Great Loop

Mid Tenn-Tom River gallery

At the bottom of this page you'll find links to other gallery postings.

We continued down the Tenn-Tom which made up almost half the waterway from Lake Michigan to Mobile.

Just resting

While abandoned barges were common, it was unusual to see one loaded.

AA Phone Home

A reminder that our communications had fallen a least a generation back.

Are you sure?

Can't be the channel, look at all the plants!

Time to get movin'

AA at Smithville marina, daybreak.

Fill'er up?

Hey, it works!

Unique houseboat

A wooden houseboat caught Ruth's eye.

Details in wood

The houseboat featured a lot of carving and cool woodwork.

Morning fog

Geese moved in the fog while we waited for a clearing to leave.

Departing Smithville

The haze is being generated by 40 degree weather, moving on.

Marina Logroller

The floating water hyacinths filled the marina.

Fishin'

Ruth caught this fisherman in the morning haze.

Hazy day

The waterfowl didn't mind but we did - there was always the chance of getting socked in.

Finally - a system

At Green Turtle a sailor gave us a system for mooring to lock bollards that we modified to work on AA - nice!

Timber rules

Another log loader reminds us of the importance of wood products to the waterway.

Lake-like shores

Most of the mid Tenn-Tom is a series of impoundments with lake-like shores.

Moss marks climate

We can see that we are getting into a more temperate climate.

Ice?

Nope, looked like it, but it was foam from a dam spillway.

Tombigbee River

Actually that wide portion is the canal, the small creek to the left is the river.

Reason number 10

for avoiding the short bus

Snagger

A paddlewheel driven Corps boat that had been used to remove deadheads and obstructions from the waterway - now a museum.

Fellow travelers

Tiramisu traveled with us on a couple of different occassions.

South and West

A westbound train crosses as Tiramisu approaches the white cliffs.

White cliffs

A very dramatic bank of sculptured rock.

By will alone

A patch of vegetation clings to a portion of the cliffs.

Chips ahoy!

A tow of woodchips destined for a paper mill.

Living on the edge

The river is relentless - house for sail cheap.

Another bargain

Fixer-upper, waterfront, great view, open to offers.
